PRESTO SM200 Parabolic
Flute (Worm Pattern) TiN-Hi-Tech drills are designed with high helix
angles for re-moving an increased volume of swarf, ensuring higher
speeds and feeds to be achieved. A competitive priced versatile
range which can update your production methods from standard high
speed steel drills and ensure swarf control over other TiN coated
drills and can challenge carbide tooling with its flexibility, depth
cutting ability and where the short run variation of the application
cannot justify the carbide cost and invesment.
The special design flute formation
dispenses chips rapidly away from the cutting edges enabling an
increased volume of coolant flow. Cutting friction and chip welding
is substantially reduced and deeper penetration with a single drill
pass can be achieved with substantial reduction in peck feeding.
The range can equally be applied
to conventional machines dedicated machines, and when included in
a CNC tooing package can be the most versatile of all drills giving

a family of drill length in the Hi-Tech Range |
SM200
Since the introduction of the highly successful
TiN coated 8% cobalt steel parabolic flute drills in JOBBER, LONG
SERIES and STUB LENGTH, PRESTO have now extended the STUB LENGTH drill
range to include fractional sizes. |

Offered
in a range of 3mm to 20mm Fractional sizes
1/8" to 3/4" |
STUB
LENGTH drills with swarf control of the
parabolic flute may seem as being unnecessary, but even in relatively
short holes swarf can be a problem, any effort by the production engineer
to overcome this usually implies slowing down the operation. Often
the use of a carbide stub drill is an alternative to the standard
stub, but the slow spiral gives poor swarf control, the use of cobalt
stub is another alternative, in this instance we have used the 8%
cobalt as the basis for our drill, not the 5% used by many of our
competitors. European practice shows that as many stub drills are
used as Jobber length with the short rigid drill giving a better more
predictable performance. |
Offered
in a range of 3mm to 13mm Fractional sizes
1/8" to 1/2" |
JOBBER
LENGTH drills the same 8% Cobalt Parabolic
flute configuration was our first venture into the hi-tech drill market,
where we have achieved rermarkable results especially in the horizontal
spindle machining centres, where the parabolic flute helps pump away
the swarf traditional flutes leave behind. This does not detract in
any way the superior performance in the vertical mode. Intended for
an initial depth of 6 times diameter without the need to peck. The
heavy duty web with a 135° split point gives better hole position
and less run-off when drilling deep holes. |
Offered
in a range of 3mm to 13mm Fractional sizes
1/8" to 1/2" |
LONG
SERIES drills have the advantage of reach
and deep hole applications, giving improved performance over the traditional
drill of better than double the penetration rates. The parabolic flute
construction provides good swarf control and the heavy parallel core
gives maximum rigidity but still maintains good swarf space. SM200
is easilythe best performer at depth. The benefits of the heavy web
and 135°
split point are even more pronounced on the deep hole application
of the long series dril. |

TIN Titanium
Nitride
Since its introduction
TiN coating has been substantially improved and is now regarded as
an effective general purpose coating favoured for drilling.
Being of 300HV high hardness to resist wear by either pick up or erosion
of metal to metal wear, high abrasive resistance and low coefficient
of friction reducing torque requirements.
The improved chip flow and surface finish also enhances the size of
hole drilled. Speed can be generally increased by 1.6 times.
It has the very distinctive gold coloration. |

TiCN Titanium
Carbonitride
The improved or second generation TiCN
we now supply is of a very high hardness, 4,000HV is achieved by alternate
layers of TiN and TiCN.
The multi-layer coating has a lower coefficient of frictin and has
better resistance to wear and shock loadings, but will not work with
high temperatures as can be achieved with TiN.
It has become the preferred coating for milling cuttersbut can offer
additional wear resistance on tapping. Speed can be 1.8 to 2.2 times
and feed per tooth increased by 5%-10%.
The blue, deep grey finish, is produced in the process of coating. |

Al-TiN
Aluminum Titanium Nitride
Al-TiN coating is
a multi-layered coating intended primarily for milling cutters.
It has a higher hardness than TiCN at 45,500HV, but has a ductility
on the coating equal to TiN which is eminently suitable for milling.
Its outstanding feature is the highest resistance to oxidisation which
allows the tools to be used without coolant. The coating acts as a
heat shield for the HSSE substrate and survives higher temperatures
than any other PVD coating and will run at 2.5 to 3 times the normal
speed with 10% extra tooth loading.
Enhanced performance can be achieved using coolant.
